Professional Me
I received my Bachelor's Degree from California State University, Long Beach in US and Modern World History. Upon graduating, I continued my education there taking courses to obtain my social science teaching credential. I have been in the classroom full-time since 2011, but I have a couple of years of prior substitute teaching experience as well. I have taught 7th grade world history, 10th grade world history, 11th grade US history Honors and 12th grade Civics. In 2017, I earned my Master's Degree of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on urban school reform at California State University, Los Angeles.
My education philosophy
I believe that the classroom must be a safe space for all students to feel comfortable learning from one another while engaging in inquiry, research and dialogue. I believe as a teacher, my role is to be a facilitator and not a sage on stage. Paulo Friere drew on the relationship between the oppressor and the oppressed in education by what he referred to as "banking education." I agree with Friere and believe that as teachers we are not all-knowing beings who deposit information into students' heads (like an ATM), but instead there is a learning process that occurs between both the students and the teacher through dialogue. I agree with L.S. Vygotsky that humans are social creatures and the social atmosphere creates an environment conducive for finding new meaning, therefore, I believe students learn best through self-discovery, solving problems, asking questions and creating meaning. In structuring my classes, I incorporate the 4 C's in order to prepare students to be productive members of our 21st century.
